Maya Weug, 20, is set to enter her sophomore F1 Academy campaign in 2025 - and will do so with a new team, as she moves to Dutch squad MP Motorsport, while retaining Ferrari Driver Academy support.

Weug, a consistent point scorer in her rookie season in Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine in 2023, was in fact announced as the Ferrari representative for the 2024 F1 Academy championship, for her first season in the all-female series in support of F1 weekends.

The Dutch/Belgian/Spanish driver joined the ranks of team Prema alongside Doriane Pin and Tina Hausmann, and immediately secured a pair of podium finishes on debut, with a third and a second place at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. After a top five in Miami, she returned to the podium at Zandvoort on her home race, again scoring a third and a second place finish.

Two runner-up results followed at Singapore and a P3 in Qatar; her first win of the season eventually came at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, where the Ferrari Driver Academy racer held off strong competition in race 3 to seal her first win in F1 Academy.

With 177 points to her name, Weug was third in the championship standings, behind Abbi Pulling and Doriane Pin.

Maya is now set to take on a new challenge with a new team, MP Motorsport, ahead of the 2025 season, the third for the series.

“It’s a hugely exciting prospect to be able to race for MP Motorsport in the F1 Academy”, said Weug. “It’s actually the first time in my motorsport career that I will represent a Dutch team, so that alone is quite special."

"MP have done well in the first two F1 Academy seasons, always running up front and taking their share of wins, and it’s definitely my goal to add to those wins and challenge for the title. I very much look forward to competing in this year’s 14 races supporting the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends and showing the world what we’re made of.”

Weug joined the Ferrari young driver programme after winning the inaugural edition of the Girls On Track - Rising Stars selection in 2020, stepping up to single seaters after a remarkable karting career that brought her to international attention.

In two years of Italian Formula 4, in 2021 and 2022, Weug claimed nine point-scoring finishes, with a sixth place as her personal best.

In 2023, she stepped up to the highly competitive Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, joining KIC Motorsport for a learning-oriented season.

Maya impressed with a remarkable second half of the season, collecting two top-ten finishes in Spa Francorchamps, then continued to score points at Mugello, Le Castellet and Monza, often battling at the front of an almost 40 car field. With one rookie win, she was third in the rookie's standings. Weug returned to FRECA for a one-off appearance in 2024, joining the grid at Imola again with KIC Motorsport.

She is the eleventh driver to be announced for the 2025 F1 Academy season, and the second for MP Motorsport, following Danish Alba Hurup Larsen's entry, who will be supported by fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger.

Since 2024, F1 teams are required to line up a female driver in F1 Academy sporting the team's colours, and Maya Weug will continue to represent the Prancing Horse in the all-female series.

“We are delighted to welcome Maya into our F1 Academy team for this season”, said Sander Dorsman, MP Motorsport’s team principal. “She has been one of the frontrunners of this year’s championship, so with Maya leading the team it’s our firm intention to go for glory in 2025."

The 2025 season is scheduled to get underway in Shanghai, China, on March 21-23.
